About
Dittander is a salt tolerant plant (a halophyte) which is generally found along the edges of salt marshes but has been increasingly introduced to gardens as a culinary and medicinal herb.
How to identify
The plant grows to between 50 and 130cm. It has grey-green, rather thick, oval leaves and small (about 2.5mm diameter) white flowers with four petals on a branched panicle.
Where to find it
Dittander appears native to coastal salt marshes in south-east England and East Anglia though it is also found inland, where it is believed to have been introduced.

How can people help
The plant may be helped by not damaging it, particularly during the flowering period. Wildlife Trust volunteer work parties look after the habitats that dittander is found in.
